DULUTH, Minn. (Northern News Now) - The 50th annual Grandma’s Marathon is less than six weeks away. One part of it is already underway.

Monday night Grandma’s Marathon opened a temporary museum at the St. Louis County Depot in downtown Duluth.

Now through race day, visitors can get a look at how the marathon started, the obstacles it has overcome and some of the elite racers who have competed over the years. Organizers also highlighted some of the lesser-known figures.

“I think that was my favorite part was just learning more about some of the stories I hadn’t heard before and talking to people I hadn’t talked to before because being on the staff you think you know a lot about Grandma’s Marathon, and I learned a few things as we put all of this stuff together,” said Zach Schneider, Grandma’s Marathon marketing and PR director.

Museum details

The Grandma’s Museum in the Depot is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. through race day. It is free to visit.

One of the museum visitors Monday night was John Naslund, who is the only person to have run every single Grandma’s Marathon.

“It’s been a lifestyle. I’ve run at least two marathons a year for 52 years. You just keep doing it. I’ve been blessed, been durable,” Naslund said.

Naslund plans to run in this summer’s marathon and has no plans to stop after that.
