DULUTH, Minn. (Northern News Now) - The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources announced new grant programs that help test for PFAS.

The programs help make sure everyone has access to safe, clean drinking water in Wisconsin.

Two grant programs

One program allows municipalities to apply for funding to create sampling programs for PFAS.

The other program allows PFAS testing in private wells that are not located in a municipality.

Mimi Johnson, director of the DNR Office of Emerging Contaminants, spoke about the goal of the programs.

“Our goal is to really help communities have those resources to identify if there are impacts of PFAS in their community. We can work to sample drinking water. That’s our primary pathway of exposure, and then we have tools to help disrupt that exposure,” Johnson said.

Funding

In April, Gov. Tony Evers signed a bill allowing the DNR to access more than $130 million in the PFAS trust fund.

The funds are used to support the programs.
