Lawmakers respond to deadly ICE-related shooting in Minneapolis
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (Northern News Now) - Following the shooting, Minneapolis city leaders and officials held a press conference.
After visiting the scene Wednesday morning, Mayor Jacob Frey called this incident the moment he’s been dreading since their arrival in Minnesota.
Frey said ice agents are causing chaos on the streets and added that the agent who fired their weapon on Wednesday recklessly used their power.
He ended with a strong message to all ice agents.
Frey also used an expletive to address the claim that this shooting was in self-defense. Now, as the community responds to this incident. Minneapolis’ police chief is calling for peace.
Senator Amy Klobuchar
“I am praying for the family and loved ones of the woman who was shot and killed by an ICE agent in Minneapolis this morning. This tragedy is the result of the administration sending federal agents onto our streets against the wishes of local law enforcement, including our respected Police Chief Brian O’Hara. We need full transparency and an investigation of what happened, and I am deeply concerned that statements made by DHS do not appear to reflect video evidence and on-the-ground accounts. While our immigration enforcement should be focused on apprehending and prosecuting violent criminals to make our communities safer, these ICE actions are doing the opposite and making our state less safe.”
Rep. Michelle Fischbach
Today’s targeted assault on ICE agents in Minneapolis is the direct result of the dangerous rhetoric from sanctuary policies and the politicians who back them. No officer should have to face a weaponized vehicle while performing their duties, yet our officers are facing a 1,300% surge in assaults and an 8,000% spike in death threats. I stand with the officer who acted in self-defense to save lives, and I will continue to fight for the men and women who keep our communities safe.
Leader Hakeem Jeffries
There is no evidence that has been presented to justify this killing. Secretary Kristi Noem is a stone-cold liar and has zero credibility. The masked ICE agent who pulled the trigger should be criminally investigated to the full extent of the law for acting with depraved indifference to human life. I pray for the loved ones of the victim and stand with the people of Minneapolis during this difficult time. The American people must reject this cruelty and extremism.
Congressman Pete Stauber
When Twin Cities politicians spew hateful rhetoric about our law enforcement for months, it gives their constituencies permission to violently attack my brothers and sisters in uniform. The events of today are the result. Minnesotans deserve leadership that respects the rule of law and encourages deescalation and cooperation.
