Duluth Fire Department warns of dangerous ice conditions on Lake Superior Bay

DULUTH, MN. (Northern News Now) - Due to recent warm temperatures in the Northland some ice fishing locations are becoming unsafe.

The Duluth Fire Department (DFD) is asking the public to exercise caution and refrain from engaging in ice fishing activities in Superior Bay which is adjacent to Park Point as of Wednesday.

Recent warm temperatures have led to large cracks forming in the ice on the bay. This includes open water areas that have made conditions unsafe for recreational activities like ice fishing.

The public should stay off of the ice and watch to see if ice conditions improve enough for ice recreational activities.

The DFD also wanted to remind the public that wind conditions play an important factor in ice safety on large bodies of water.
