Matt Halverson

Matt is now a rink side reporter for My9 Bulldog Sports after serving as station Sports Director for a year.

Matt Halverson joined Northern News Now in April of 2018 as the weekend sports anchor/reporter. In September of 2021, Matt was promoted to Sports Director.

He’s originally from Rice Lake, Wisconsin, and attended the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (UWEC) with a major in journalism and a minor in music.

Matt came to Duluth in February as a sports photographer/production assistant at KQDS FOX 21, before coming to KBJR 6.

Sports have always been big a part of Matt’s life, and he feels lucky to get the opportunity to cover the many talented athletes in the Twin Ports area. Specifically, his favorite sports are golf and baseball.

While in Eau Claire, he was heavily involved with the campus broadcasting organization “TV-10”, hosting a sports talk show as well as assisting in live athletic broadcasts. He was also heavily involved with the music department and played trombone in UWEC’s Jazz Ensemble I. While in the group, Matt had the honor of sharing the stage with a few of his jazz inspirations, most notably saxophonist Jimmy Heath and vibraphonist Stefon Harris. He also spent time playing in the UWEC Wind Symphony and Trombone Choir.

Additionally, Matt worked as a part-time sports photographer at WQOW News 18, and gained experience covering the Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, Milwaukee Brewers, and Wisconsin Badgers.

Matt enjoys living in the Northland because there is always a new adventure to be had outdoors. When he’s not out reporting, he’s often fishing, skiing, or golfing.
