ST. PAUL, Minn. (Northern News Now) - State Sen. Justin Eichorn, a Republican from Grand Rapids, has submitted his letter of resignation after he was federally charged with attempted coercion and enticement of a minor.

Senate Republican Leader Mark Johnson (R-East Grand Forks) shared that update in a news release Thursday morning.

Johnson said Eichorn’s resignation is effective Thursday,

“This is the right thing to do for his family and the Senate,” Sen. Johnson said. “We are ready to move on and do the important work that needs to be done at the Capitol.”

A motion to expel is not in order if the member has resigned, according to Johnson.

Editor’s Note: A previous version of the story had Eichorn’s state charges for prostitution of a minor. That state charge was dismissed on March 19 due to his federal charges. The story has been updated to list his federal charge of attempted coercion and enticement of a minor.
