DULUTH, Minn. (Northern News Now) - The seventh-ranked University of Minnesota Duluth women’s hockey team had no easy task to open the 2024-25 season taking on the top-ranked team in the nation, but the Bulldogs never faltered in a 2-1 win over first-ranked Ohio State.

Sophomore goaltender Ève Gascon was between the pipes for the Bulldogs and made 39 saves in the victory which is the third most saves in a game in her career.

Ohio State got the game’s first goal just one minute and thirty-nine seconds into the first period when Jordyn Petrie banked the puck in off a couple of Bulldogs players to put the Buckeyes up 1-0.

The Bulldogs wouldn’t respond until the final minute of the second period when graduate forward Olivia Wallin banked the puck off the back of Buckeyes goaltender Amanda Theile to tie the game at 1-1.

With just under thirty seconds to go in the game, former Buckeye and current fifth-year UMD forward Olivia Mobley got possession of the puck behind the net and fed sophomore defender Ida Karlsson for the one-time blast that gave the Bulldogs the late 2-1 lead.

It was Karlsson’s first game-winning goal in her collegiate career and helped the Bulldogs take down their first top-ranked opponent since December of 2022.

The 2-1 victory was also the first time UMD defeated Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio since January of 2021.

Even though the Bulldogs were outshot 40-14, they were able to shut down the Buckeyes’ prolific power play as Ohio State went 0-3 on the man advantage.

New head coach Laura Schuler earned her first win in her debut behind the bench for UMD.
