New sports stadium coming to UWS Yellowjackets Athletics

DULUTH, MN. (KBJR) -- On Wednesday, the University of Wisconsin-Superior announced a new, all-season sports stadium is coming to the school.

It’ll be called the Superior Choice Credit Union Stadium.

The credit union got an exclusive naming rights partnership after an historic gift to Yellowjacket athletics.

The stadium will be home to the school’s Track & Field and Soccer teams, located right next to the school’s wellness center.

At a press conference Wednesday, student-athletes said the new stadium is a good thing for the entire community.

“This stadium is a beckon of opportunity for today’s students and a generation of yellowjackets to come,” said Women’s Soccer Team member Niya Wilson. “It will be a new home for us to learn, compete, and grow, plus hopefully continue to win a few more championships-if, not more.”

Construction on the stadium will begin in the spring and will be open next fall.

UWS didn’t share an exact price tag for the project.

They’ll be tearing down the Ole Haugsrud Stadium grandstand to make room.
