Stella Maris welcomes students to first day at new high school
DULUTH, MN. (KBJR) - Stella Maris Academy opened its doors for the first time to high school students Tuesday.
It is now the only Catholic high school in the Twin Ports.
Up until now, Stella Maris Academy only taught students in kindergarten through 8th grade.
Last fall, Stella Maris bought the former Hills Youth and Family Services building in the Woodland neighborhood for around $4 million.
“We felt like we’re in a good space, and we have a really strong academic and spiritual program in our elementary and middle school, and so the time is right. The time is right now,” said school President Andrew Hilliker.
Stella Maris spent the last year renovating the building and getting it ready for the 60 freshmen and sophomores who started class Tuesday.
They say they plan to expand to upperclassmen in the coming years as they continue renovations.
