DULUTH, MN. (KBJR) - The volleyball bells were ringing in Romano Gymnasium on Monday afternoon, marking day one of UMD’s preseason. With no COVID restrictions and a healthy roster, the Bulldogs are ready to begin their season in the most competitive Division II conference in the country.

The 2022 season will signify the first year in three years where the bulldogs will experience normalcy at last. From battling COVID to several injuries, overcoming adversity has been at the forefront of this team.

However, they’ve turned a page as they welcome in three freshmen and welcome back four seniors including veterans and captains, Sydney Lanoue and Madison Gordon who head coach Jim Boos says he will be looking to lead his ‘dog pack.

“They just need to set the standard and lead by example and make sure that they are teaching the younger players what they’re supposed to be doing and what those expectations and standards are,” said Boos.

“It’s super important that they come in here and know the culture that we’re trying to create, especially like we call it, a ‘Bulldog mentality’ when we’re out there and we’re scrappy and we’re fighting for these balls and giving our teammates more opportunities to put the ball away for us, so that’s super important and I think our coaches do a good job of setting that tone right away for those freshman coming in,” said Lanoue.

Boos also adds that they are working towards becoming the offensive terminators they’ve been pinned as in past seasons.

The Bulldogs open up their season on the road against Minot State on Friday, September 9th.
