DULUTH, MN. (KBJR) - For high school football players in the state of Wisconsin, that magical feeling was finally back as Tuesday marked the official start to the season with their first day of practice in the books, and that included the Superior Spartans.

Across the bridge in Superior, Wisconsin it was sparty time! It’s the first time in multiple years that head coach Bob DeMeyer and his Spartans are back on track with no COVID restrictions.

After a disappointing 3-4 season last year, DeMeyer says their team’s greatest desire is to come out and compete as hard as they can for four quarters on any given Friday night to have the opportunity to win in a competitive big rivers conference. He credits his players’ great energy, effort, and attitude for their work all off-season. On Tuesday it all added up on the field.

“To have a full off-season where we don’t have those restrictions, we can get in the weight room and get after it and spot and do everything like we used to do. To be in the classroom again with our leadership group and do the things we do all offseason, that’s been amazing too and those things translate to the field obviously,” said DeMeyer.

“I’m out for blood with everyone right now, I just want to win. Especially after last year, this year is going to be a big bounce-back year for us and everyone’s just chomping at the bit ready to go,” said senior quarterback Gotelaere.

The Spartans open up their season on August 19th against Wausau West.
