DULUTH, MN. (KBJR) - Northwoods summer league baseball is back! The Duluth Huskies will open up their season on the road on Memorial Day.

The Huskies will compete in 68 games throughout the next 10 weeks. They will be led by head coach Marcus Pointer in his fifth season with the Huskies as they look to make it back to the playoffs after finishing below .500, ranking second in the Great Plains East Conference last season. While they battled the adversity of COVID-19 and several roster changes in the ‘21 season, the navy and white are ready to roll and in their words ready to ‘get grinding.’

“We have some local talent on the roster. Every time Marcus calls me or texts me to tell me we are signing a contract to this guy or that guy, I do a little research on the player and it’s like wow we’ve got some talent,” said General Manager Greg Culver.

“We’re looking to play competitive baseball every game and give ourselves a chance to play in the playoffs. It’s definitely a learning curve for a lot of these guys, I’m pretty sure none of them have played seven games in a week. It’s kind of the closest to minor league baseball. That is how we preach in how we recruit. Guys want a shot at professional baseball, well here’s your first chance as an amateur to really see what it’s like on the road, bus schedules, travel, all that stuff,” said Head Coach Marcus Pointer.

Opening day is scheduled for Monday at 6:35 pm on the road against the Mankato Moondogs. The Huskies’ home opener is set for June 1st at the same time against the Minnesota Mudpuppies.
