DULUTH, MN. (KBJR) - UW-Superior’s, Maya Callaway, closed out her collegiate career in one of the best ways possible. Callaway took home the UMAC player of the year award for the second straight season.

In singles play, Maya went 8-0 in conference. Callway now holds the record for career singles wins with 33 as well as the best singles winning percentage at 61 percent. She also finished with the second most doubles wins with 24.

Maya is a Duluth East grad and going into her final season of tennis, she was ready to go out with a bang.

“I definitely knew, like I was like ok I have to win all of my matches again this year and so there was a little bit of a nerve aspect sometimes, but I think settling into the season, I just did what I had to do, played my best tennis, had fun with it and made some great memories with my teammates. Tennis is a lifelong sport that’s why when we go up to the courts at Disc in Duluth to practice it’s all age ranges playing tennis and I think that’s important too like I’ll always be able to do this throughout life,” said Callaway.

Callaway adds that playing against her sister was her favorite memory. Sophomore Shay Callaway plays tennis across the bridge for UMD.

On the men’s side, junior Michael Janes took home the UMAC men’s player of the year award in singles competition. Janes went 7-1 in conference play.

Then there is head coach, Ceejay Schaffner, who took home UMAC men’s head coach of the year award. Ceejay and his ‘Jackets will be playing in the NCAA tournament opening round Thursday in Chicago.
