Spartans battle scheduling difficulties

SUPERIOR, WI. (KBJR) - After finishing last season 21-2, the Superior softball team is picking up right where they left off. So far this year the Spartans are undefeated, however, they’ve only played 5 games.

A major reason is due to mother nature. The Spartans like several Northland teams have been battling through unpredictable weather conditions, leaving them with only 4 home games this season.

While they are embracing the tough times with smiles and joy each time they hit the practice field, they aren’t ignoring the challenge of a shrunk schedule.

“It’s really tough it’s hard to know my senior year, we’re only going to have four home games, that’s tough you know I want to see my family play at home before I go to college and that’s been tough,” said senior Sigfrids.

“Some of these girls that are juniors and seniors, they had to take a whole season off, plus a shortened season, and this year we’ve only played 5 games and we’ve had 11 canceled. It kind of tugs at my heart when I think about it because they do work hard at what they love doing here playing softball, it’s just the way things are up here in the north and the way they’ve been and the way things have been in the country, so it’s just one of those things,” said head coach Mike Sather.

The Spartans’ next home game is their last scheduled one which is on Friday, May 13th against Grand Rapids.
