UPDATE: Cook teen admits to shooting mom over meth dispute, charged with attempted murder

MORCOM TOWNSHIP, MN -- A Cook teen has been charged with attempted murder after authorities say she admitted to shooting her mom Sunday after a dispute over meth.

According to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened around 4:30 p.m. Sunday in Morcom Township, just west of Cook, Minnesota.

The victim, identified as Stephanie Straw, 40, was on her way to the Cook hospital when her boyfriend called 911 stating Straw’s daughter shot her in the back.

The boyfriend told police the daughter was still at the home where the shooting happened.

While authorities drove to the scene, they found the daughter’s car stuck in a ditch two miles from the crime scene.

Three people were in another, nearby vehicle.

Two were identified as good Samaritans and released, while the third was identified as the suspect and daughter of the woman who was shot.

The 16-year-old was taken in and later admitted to police she shot her mom.

Straw told officers she was in her bed when she heard a “pop” sound, and then a “bang” sound adding it felt like her back exploded.

Then she realized she had been shot.

Straw said before she was shot, her daughter asked her to give her back her methamphetamine.

Straw said she gave the meth back after being shot and called her boyfriend to go to the hospital.

The juvenile daughter is charged with felony attempted murder in the second degree.

Her case is currently in juvenile court.

Straw is said to be in stable condition.

The shooting is believed to be an isolated incident.

The public is not in any danger.
