LATEST: Fire at condemned Esmond Building is under control, under investigation

UPDATE 7:00 p.m. -- Crews have contained the fire and an official cause is under investigation. The Esmond Building has been boarded up to discourage people from trying to enter. Duluth Fire Chief Shawn Krizaj held a press conference Monday afternoon to provide details about the fire.

UPDATE 2:30 p.m. -- As of this afternoon, we are told the fire crews on scene at the Esmond Building fire have been given a break and new teams have come to help.

There was a heavy fire that started on the first and second floors of the building early this morning.

Crews continue to evaluate and put out any remaining hot spots.

City officials say they may hold a press conference later today.

The fire is still under investigation at this time.

UPDATE 10:00 a.m.-- According to the Duluth Fire Department, the roof of the Esmond Building has collapsed.

Tennants in the ally between W. Superior St. and West 1st street have been evacuated.

This is a developing story.

UPDATE 9:10 a.m. -- According to the Duluth Fire Department, residents have been evacuated from surrounding buildings, and Superior Fire has been requested to provide mutual aid.

DULUTH, MN. (KBJR) -Duluth fire crews are responding to a two-alarm fire at the former Esmond Building.

It broke out just after 7:30 a.m. on Monday.

According to fire officials, there is heavy fire on the first and second floors of the building.

They have pulled crews from inside the building and will be fighting defensively from the exterior.

This is the 3rd time this building has caught on fire in the last month.
