TWO HARBORS, MN (KBJR) - Since The Festival of Sail announced its relocation to Two Harbors, hotels are already booked.

General Manager of Larsmont Cottages Troy Melichar said, “When the dates were announced any of the remaining inventory we had sold out within 24 hours, so the phones were going off the hook, online reservations were coming in.”

Melichar said the announcement sent a shockwave of bookings impacting hotels across the Northland, as hundreds of people scramble to secure lodging.

“We couldn’t believe it,” Melichar said.

Town leaders are encouraged by the relocation. Many believe the festival adds a boost to the small North Shore city’s tourism and economy.

“We thought well, this is an opportunity to help out,” said Two Harbors Mayor Chris Swanson.

Swanson said it’s going to take a lot of planning to mitigate traffic flow while also meeting the demand for food and lodging.

“It’s gonna be a series of ongoing meetings where each issue gets addressed and they get organized around it, the right people get brought into that,” Swanson said “The good news is we are getting way ahead of this”.

Swanson and the Fire Department said they don’t have any meetings scheduled at this point, but they will figure things out after the holidays.

“I think as they look through it they’ll be able to solve any issue that we have,” Swanson said.
